Leonard Freed . This Is the Day: The March on Washington . Getty Publications .

Foreword by Julian Bond
Introduction by Michael Eric Dyson
Afterword by Paul Farber.

This Is the Day: The March on Washington is a stirring photo-essay by photographer Leonard Freed documenting the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom of August 28, 1963, the historic day on which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the base of the Lincoln Memorial. This book commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the historic march that ultimately led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Never before published in book form, the seventy-five photographs in this volume were chosen from among the hundreds of images that Freed made in the nation’s capitol before, during, and after the march. These images not only present us with stunning wide-angle views of hundreds of thousands of marchers overflowing the National Mall but also focus on small groups of people straining to see the speakers and on individual faces, each one filled with hope and yearning, epitomized by the beautiful young woman who throws her entire being into singing “We Shall Overcome.”
Accompanying the photographs are a first-hand, backstage account of the preparations leading up to the march by social activist and civil rights leader Julian Bond; an introduction to the importance of the march and Dr. King’s involvement by sociology professor and author Michael Eric Dyson; and an informative discussion of Freed’s approach to the photographic project by scholar Paul Farber.
Leonard Freed (American, 1929–2006) was a pioneer in the genre of socially conscious photojournalism. Freed’s photographs are represented in many public and private collections. His book Black in White America, first published in 1967/68, was reissued by Getty Publications in 2010. Julian Bond helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and is currently professor of history at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Michael Eric Dyson is a professor of sociology at Georgetown University and the author of sixteen books, including April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Death and How It Changed America (Basic Civitas Books, 2008). Paul Farber is currently completing his doctorate in American studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

I start taking pictures when I was ten years old . First I was using a Kodak 6/9 mm box, then a very cheap plastic « Diana » after that I start to use my father’s camera, a Foca « Sport », a French version of Leica. When I was thirteen years old my parents offer me a Zenith, and two years after a Praktica LLC.
I start to do it as my own when I was sixteen so I bought a Nikon F, just the body, and it took me one year more to buy the lenses, a 2:35 mm which I am still using today.
In terms of films I have use Kodachrome 64 Asa and TriX.
Charles Petit

Ray Metzker . 2008 . Steidl & Partners
The goal of this publication is a fully-retrospective presentation of the work of Ray K. Metzker, one of the most important and original American photographers of the second half of the twentieth century. The book, with more than 200 high-quality reproductions, features all aspects of his prolific career of more fifty years – which still shows no sign of abating. Well-known and much-exhibited in the United States, Metzker is inexplicably less well-known outside the States. This retrospective survey encompasses the full range of Metzker’s brilliant, constantly evolving, formal language.
Although Metzker has photographed in Europe on several occasions, he has never felt the need to travel to particularly exotic climes for inspiration. He finds it readily at hand in the neighbourhoods where he has lived – principally Chicago and Philadelphia – and increasingly in the domain of nature, though the vegetation he depicts in such original form might well be that of a weed-clogged vacant city lot as much as the vast open plains of the American West.

One of the foremost photographers working today, Joel Meyerowitz is renowned for his crucial role in the establishment of color photography as a fine art. His work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. The exhibition coincides with the publication of a major book from Phaidon Press in November.

Joel Meyerowitz Part I and Part II will feature images from the 1960s to 2011 from many of his most famous series. The exhibition includes his seminal street photography - both color and black-and-white, intimate images of American life, and landscapes exploring luminous scenes from Cape Cod to Tuscany.

Among the highlights in the exhibition will be a number of images that show the artist’s witty take on street scenes: Times Square, New York City, 1965, offers a black-and-white shot of a movie theater with a couple kissing underneath a marquee that reads “Kiss Me Stupid.” A photograph from St. Louis in 1978 depicts a rundown street corner with a sign offering “Brains 25¢.” Recent work made in Provence last year will also be on view, as well as many other images on exhibition to the public for the first time.

Coinciding with the exhibition at Howard Greenberg Gallery is the publication of the two-volume book Joel Meyerowitz: Taking My Time (Phaidon, November 1, 2012; $750, limited edition), which will feature nearly 600 photographs spanning the artist’s career, with many previously unpublished images. In addition, a museum retrospective of Meyerowitz’s work opened this spring at the Hotel des Arts in Toulon, France, and will open in Paris at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in January 2013. Also in October Sterling Signature Books will publish Provence: Lasting Impressions with photographs by Meyerowitz and written by his wife, Maggie Barrett.

Joel Meyerowitz was born in New York City in 1938. He began his career in the 1960s as a street photographer after a chance encounter with Robert Frank. His first book, Cape Light, published in 1979, is considered a classic work of color photography and has sold more than 100,000 copies. He is the author of 17 other books, including Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks (Aperture, 2009). In the wake of 9/11, as the only photographer given official access to Ground Zero, he created the World Trade Center Archive, selections of which have toured around the world. Meyerowitz is a two-time Guggenheim fellow and a recipient of awards from both the NEA and NEH. He is a recent winner of the Royal Photographic Society’s Centenary Award, its highest honor, and this fall, for his 50 years of work, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lucie Awards, an annual event honoring the greatest achievements in photography. His work is in the collections of many major museums, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Museum of Fine Art, Boston. Meyerowitz lives and works in New York City.

Text: press release
